Former president of Furman University and noted author and historian and a leader in higher education, Dr. David Shi will speak at Atlanta's Northside Drive Baptist Church on Sunday, September 17, at 4:00 p.m. As the 2017 presenter for the Gladys and Tom McComb Lecture Series, he will deliver a lecture entitled, "On the Pursuit of Happiness."
"We are honored to have someone of Dr. Shi's stature at Northside Drive," says Dr. James E. Lamkin, senior minister of NDBC. Such a lecture is in keeping with the inquiring nature that has been a hallmark of our church since its founding in 1952. We are pleased to make his appearance available to the entire Atlanta community."
A specialist in intellectual and cultural history, Dr. Shi is the author of several books, including Matthew Josephson, Bourgeois Bohemian (Yale University Press, 1980), The Simple Life: Plain Living and High Thinking in American Culture (Oxford University Press, 1985), which was a History Book Club selection, and Facing Facts: Realism in American Thought and Culture, 1850-1920 (Oxford University Press, 1994). He is also co-author, with the late George B. Tindall, of America: a Narrative History (W. W. Norton). Now in its ninth edition, this textbook has sold over two million copies.
The Gladys and Tom McComb Lecture Series, founded in 1999, honors the memory of the McCombs, who were long-time members of NDBC whose intellectual curiosity, breadth of knowledge, and lifelong pursuit of learning were an inspiration to all who knew them.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the NDBC chapel. The church is located at 3100 Northside Drive, Atlanta, GA 30305. Further information can be found by calling the church at 404-237-8621 or visiting the websites davideshi.com and northsidedrive.org.
