For those who are experiencing sadness, the usually joyous season of Advent can be especially difficult. In our culture, and specifically in the Christian church, we focus on the anticipation and celebration of the birth of Jesus, yet that is only part of Advent. The Christmas story also contains difficult elements: a young couple separated from their family, a lack of hospitality, a need for shelter, fleeing from an oppressive ruler, and the anxiety of childbirth. The Christmas story invites us to simultaneously hold joy and grief in tension. God created us to experience a wide range of emotions and we are invited to embrace them all. This is a special invitation to you and those whom you love to attend a service that honors that tension between joy and grief.
