Program: RESEARCHING THE CIVIL WAR, USING PRIMARY & SECONDARY MATERIALS
Michael K. Shaffer, a Civil War historian, author, newspaper columnist, instructor, and battlefield guide, will explain during the program how to use various sources, both primary and secondary accounts, when researching the American Civil War. He handles this seemingly daunting task by demonstrating to the participants how to explore basic research methods; investigate memoirs, regimental histories, and auto-biographies; and take a look at the myriad websites offering information ranging from period newspapers to soldier service records.
Shaffer is a member of the Society of Civil War Historians, Historians of the Civil War Western Theater, and Georgia Association of Historians. He serves as a Civil War consultant for the River Line Historic Area. Shaffer holds BA and MA degrees, with honors, in Military History - Civil War Studies. He frequently lectures to various groups, and currently teaches Civil War courses at Kennesaw State University's College of Continuing and Professional Education.
