Collage: Design Tool and Art Form
Description: Collage is more than just throwing stuff at a page with glue on it and seeing what sticks! For over 100 years collage has been a respected contemporary art form, uniquely appropriate to modern (and post-modern, and post-post-modern) times. We will view a PowerPoint slide show of examples of collage by fine artists, discussing the design elements and principles that make a collage succeed. Then we'll get our hands dirty by practicing collage using several prompts and types of materials. We'll consider the pros and cons of various materials, substrates and adhesives. Finally, we'll look at how collage can be a way to develop designs for work in fiber media including quilts, tapestries, surface design, and mixed media.
