WHAT IS THE HIGHER BRAIN?
Think back to the best day, or the best moment of your life. What are the emotions that were there? All experiences will be different but for most, the feelings people share are pretty similar – JOYFUL, FULFILLED, EMPOWERED, INVINCIBLE, PEACEFUL, CONFIDENT, CONNECTED, CONTENT, ABUNDANT. These are the emotions that come from the prefrontal cortex of the brain, which rarely registers any activity outside of Tibetan monks who have meditated for years. We’ve had glimpses of it throughout our lives, but no way to access it other than these brief moments. Until now. Thanks to the brilliant Dr. Michael Cotton, we now have a way to activate this prefrontal cortex – the most advanced part of our brain. This is truly transformational work.
WHAT IS THE LOWER BRAIN?
We all live mostly from our primal, fear-based lower brain. The lower brain came about in the Stone Age when survival and ‘sameness’ was a biological mandate. Sameness = safety. If the cavemen was able to get food for his family and not get eaten by a tiger, it was a successful day, no matter what he had to go through. So the lower brain recognizes that as a success, and says we will continue to do that every day. Never mind that there were 6 other paths that were equally safe and far easier. That caveman will never try them because he survived the trek on the first one. Doing something different could mean imminent death. We don’t have literal tigers today, but our figurative tigers are relationships, jobs we loathe, traffic, and time management in our busy lives. The lower brain has no meaning, no purpose, and no rationality. It’s only function is survival. The lower brain’s job is to find problems. It is the fight or flight part of the brain, always on high alert. Anything different is a threat – different thought patterns, different behavior. Our lower brain is constantly trying to sabotage us. We are ‘surviving’ after all, and thus it wants to make sure we don’t change anything. The very system that was created to keep us from being eaten is now eating us alive.
