RAIIN Dance Theater: in Human is a part of the Georgia Tech Arts 2017-2018 Season.
in Human is a celebration and examination of Black culture through the lens of dance, spoken word, contemporary trap music, jazz, and hip hop. RAIIN Dance Theater partners with the Georgia Tech School of Industrial Design and Georgia Tech Research Labs to create a new experience in which an engineered set transforms the stage. The physical, high-energy movement of the RDT dancers juxtaposed with the familiar Atlanta cityscape embodies the human connection between art and social justice. The work set to a score of classical and contemporary sounds of the Black experience.
Inspired by the literary work of Toni Morrison and the visual aesthetics of Jean-Michel Basquiat, in Human explores the intricacies of movement and influences of social justice within art. What happens to a person who is denied their humanity? How does that denial affect them mentally, physically, and emotionally? in Human explores the ways in which sub-human classification affects the art they create.
RAIIN Dance Theater’s mission is to connect people of all cultural backgrounds by creating art that moves people to think, to find their voice, and to join the conversation surrounding social change, justice and an appreciation of who black people are as a culture. The vitality of the company is driven by unpacking the layers that comprise the black experience, connecting the past, present and future to ignite a new generation of empowered youth, amidst the movement. RDT is exploring the marriage between arts and technology to create new performance experiences.
