Drawing influence from his degree in creative writing, Meloy began fashioning a hybrid of literate lyrics and wideranging pop music, touching upon everything from Sandy Denny to Morrissey in the process. The Portland, Oregon band has been releasing cd's since 2002, but it was their 2006 release The Crane Wife that really moved them to the big leagues. The group has gone on to release 9 cd's along with a host of EP's and singles. Their last full length cd was "What a Terrible World, What a Beautful World" in 2015. The band recently released a 10th anniversary special edition of "The Crane Wife" with additional material. The Decemberists last played Atlanta for 2 sold out shows at the Tabernacle in 2015.
