Heaven & Earth, a solo Art Exhibit by Shelly Leitheiser
The solo art show titled “Heaven and Earth” consists of 26 paintings by Marietta artist Shelly Leitheiser. It reflects themes of earth, science, imagination and astronomy. The art show is on display December 3 through January 31, 2018 at the SCAA satellite gallery in Powder Springs. The satellite gallery is located in the municipal building at 4488 Pineview Drive in downtown Powder Springs. Hours are Monday - Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission is free.
Leitheiser is an environmental advocate as well as a fan of science and sci-fi. That is reflected in her paintings depicting science theories in abstract styles, such as “Albedo Effect” and “Erosion” which comment on climate change. Other paintings in the show comment on our place in the universe. Earth is seen as vulnerable in “Moon Over Roatan.” She bridges the gap with her art between real and imagined landscapes by depicting both. The impressionist painting “Cumberland Horses” was based on Leitheiser’s photography from Cumberland Island. “World 21” imagines a world somewhere else, from her imagination.
Leitheiser paints primarily in acrylic and watercolor, and typically combines realism with abstraction. Reflected in her paintings are topics including the environment, wildlife, science and astronomy. She has also been doing figure painting and portraits for many years.
The art show is sponsored by the South Cobb Arts Alliance and the City of Powder Springs.
Shelly Leitheiser has been painting and drawing all her life. She grew up in central Minnesota and has moved across the country several times.
She attended the University of Minnesota where she studied illustration, fine art, and media. After college she moved to San Francisco where she had jobs in the publishing and legal fields, but she always painted. She has been in many group and solo shows, in small cities and large. She co-founded an environmental art group with artist friends in Minnesota in 2012. She participated in art walks and art fairs for several years there too.
Shelly is an artist and illustrator. She has done commissioned paintings, portraits, book covers, and done creative design and illustration as a marketing professional. She also continues to do website design as well as painting.
Starting out as an acrylic painter with a realist style, Shelly’s painting has transitioned into different territory. This has freed her up to pursue her own style of combining vibrant color and abstraction with realism, impressionism and socially relevant themes. Her watercolor paintings are of a more illustrative style, often scenes of people or places she has traveled.
Shelly and her husband Sam moved to Marietta in July 2014, and she very much enjoys living in Georgia. Shelly’s art studio is in her home, and her main art website is http://Leitworks.com, though she sells artwork through several online art galleries.
