BLACK & WHITE - NOTAN
Seeing compositions in two values-black & white, makes dynamic drawings and paintings! Notan is the term used by the Japanese to express the principle of design seen in flat areas of black or white value.
Our source material will be still life and landscape photographs & drawings. Once the clarity of the structures or masses is established, the image will be developed further through line, color, rhythm and harmony. Three projects will be presented to show how the basic element of Notan can be used to create strong drawings, collages and paintings. The expressive power of white-on-white and black-on-black have inspired artists such as; Rembrandt, Picasso and Franz Kline. Come and be inspired too! See www.spruillarts.org for a list of supplies you will need to bring to class.
