Every day, everything that happens seems faster, bigger, and more extreme than what happened the day before. And every day we're inundated with more information, more images, and more things that we should be doing.. It's exhausting to keep up -- sometimes it's exhausting to engage at all, even when you know that you need to.
So, how do you cope? How do you keep showing up for yourself and your friends, families, and neighbors?
We can learn a lot from healthy coping tactics used in mental health professions. Calming, shocking, breathing, grounding, journaling -- all of these are tools that we can use to design our own coping strategies. At MODA, we're inspired by the work of organizations like The Icarus Project, a support network and education project by and for people who cope with mental illness, and by local activists like Yarrow Koning, who hold community self-care workshops. In this tradition of making space as a community to take care of one another, we're hosting a space of our own at MODA in which we'll work together to design coping tools.
The goal of this workshop is to design a self-care kit you can use to cope with our weird world. We'll begin our workshop by talking about how to take the first step -- figuring out what you need to take care of yourself. Then we'll pick and choose strategies to include in self care kits, assemble tools, and decorate the kits. Half informative and half exploratory, this workshop will provide a hands-on open space in which to build your unique self-care kit.
For this workshop, we're asking for a donation of at least $10 to pay for materials. You'll walk away with a box full of coping strategies and tools. Appropriate for ages 16+.
