The Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus’ holiday concert at The Cathedral of St. Philip in Buckhead has been a cherished community holiday tradition for more than two decades. This year, the AGMC’s 38th holiday gift to metro Atlanta is a fabulous concert, Holly, Jolly and Gay!, featuring new arrangements and new artistic leadership.

Spectacular New Directions
Holly, Jolly and Gay! is the first holiday concert of the AGMC under the artistic leadership of Donald Milton III, completing his first full year as the group’s artistic director. “It’s such a pleasure to have Don as part of the Voices of Note family! His love of music and joy in directing the men’s chorus is evident in his work. The holiday show is a wonderful way to showcase his talent,” stated Eve Campbell, Executive Director of Voices of Note, the umbrella organization over the chorus.
Having made his mark last spring during the chorus’ successful tour of Georgia, Milton was promoted to artistic director after serving as the interim artistic director since January. He promises, “The Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus should be the most fun holiday concert in town. People will be laughing and fully entertained — and the music will still be spectacular."
Don’t Miss the Harmonic Gays
Remarking on the title, Holly, Jolly and Gay!, Milton commented that he was trying to spark the idea, “That this group is a little different than other choruses in town. That’s a real strength.” He added, “This is the best men’s chorus in the South, and I want people to come and really dig into how beautiful our sound is. But, this chorus also has personality for days, which of course we’re bringing that spirit into the concert.”
To mark the festive occasion, Milton arranged a new version of the widely popular “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” He noted, “It’s one of my favorite Christmas songs. And it has the lyric ‘make the Yuletide gay,’ which we sing out in a such way that you can’t miss it. Audiences will love it.”
Milton believes, “every concert should have moments where they laugh, they cry, and they get some chill bumps — that’s what makes a moving concert experience, and Holly, Jolly and Gay! has that. We’re opening with this really great arrangement of ‘Gaudete!,’ a Latin carol by Michael Engelhardt, but it’s really this great new take on the song. It has this beautiful melody and some Medieval-sounding harmonies that very quickly transition into very 21st century harmonies.”
Laughter and Love
It’s not all serious music, Milton says. “One really fun piece is ‘Christmas Melody’ by Richard Gregory; it’s probably going to be one of the most memorable pieces on the program and will have people humming for days. We’re also doing a tongue-in-cheek song called ‘Black Christmas,’ which asks the question: ‘Why can’t Christmas be black sometimes?’ It should really resonate well here in Atlanta, which is proudly the Black Capital of America. There’s also a gospel arrangement of ‘Children Go Where I Send Thee!’ by Caldwell and Ivory. Then, we’re asking the audience to join us in a sing-along of ‘Silent Night,’ before closing with a gorgeous ‘Oh, Holy Night’.”
Get the Scoop at the Ice Cream Social
Continuing a long-standing tradition, the chorus is honored to offer a free ice cream social following the Saturday matinee. In addition to the delightfully tasty treat, the social allows the matinee’s audience to get to know the men of the AGMC.
2018 Saturday Performances Have New Start Times
In a break from tradition, there are changes to the Saturday performances start times. The matinee begins at 1 p.m. and the evening show at 6. Patrons are asked to please take note of the earlier start and to plan accordingly.
