Whether you are a beginner picking up a brush for the first time or someone returning to art after a long time away from the easel, this workshop is designed to be informative, fun and stimulating. Beginning with a discussion on the “basics” of painting (from materials to paint handling), the workshop will also address the fundamentals of composition, color, value, edges and perspective. Instruction will include a short painting demo by Dan each day, with explanation of his process along the way.
On the first day of the workshop, participants will work from a still life to paint quick studies from life that incorporate the fundamentals discussed, with plenty of one-on-one individual instruction throughout the day. The following two days of the workshop will focus on painting en plein air, including how to develop greater skills of observation, simplification, and quickly painting “wet on wet” (alla prima) to translate what you see and experience into strong paintings. Participants will paint outdoors at different locations each day. The basic goal for each day of this workshop will be to develop the ability to create expressive, accurate, and “painterly” paintings!
