They can and they do across the work of many notable designers, where stories are inscribed on everyday objects — a towel, a cutting board, napkins, a wall, a blanket.
Timothy Goodman, who inspired this workshop, is known for his incredible work re-examining objects by inscribing stories on them, from cars to knives to cafe walls. We’ll be taking inspiration from this designer and exploring the story of an object.
Half writing workshop, half Graphic Design 101, in this workshop we’ll learn how to blend visual and textual modes of expression. We’ll explore an object, tell its story, and represent the story on the object itself. In this workshop, we’ll be exploring the majestic vase. By exposing the stories behind the object on the object itself, we play with levels of meaning around that thing. Together, we'll tease out the stories we each ascribe to a vase and expose those associations on the object itself.
Participation and Materials Fee: $30 for non-members, $25 for MODA members.
This fee covers everything you need to create and bring home your own storied vase: a vase inscribed with your story, a journal to write that story in, a pen, and some take-home worksheets to help you continue telling stories.
Fee includes admission to MODA’s current exhibition, Designing Playful Cities. Appropriate for ages 16+. Please reach out to the facilitator, Jess Lewis if you have questions or accessibility needs.
