Join us on January 28 from 3 - 5:30 p.m. for a subversive cross stitch workshop at MODA!
Cross-stitch is a type of embroidery in which the needlework creates images that look pixelated. Traditionally a way for society to measure a woman's marriageability, cross-stitch has recently become a vehicle for craftivism (craft activism) and used to assert diverse identities and demand social change. Grab a needle and thread and fabric and join us as we co-opt traditional designs or create entirely new ones that command attention and express your beliefs.
You'll learn about how cross-stitch got to be subversive, cross-stitching basics, design creation, and how to bring that design into reality. Bring your passion and we'll provide the hoops, needles, and thread. But don't feel like you have to wait until the class to start thinking about what you want to make - start thinking about your design now. We will be working with four-inch hoops, and I would recommend designs with five or fewer colors and no shading.
Participation and Materials Fee: $35 for non-members, $30 for MODA members. Or, bring along a friend and pay $50 for a Buddy Pack for Two Adults. This fee covers everything you need to create and bring home your own awesome cross stitch: 4" hoop, AIDA cloth, needle, threader, embroidery floss, and graph paper. Fee includes admission to MODA's current exhibition, Text Me: How We Live In Language. Appropriate for ages 16+.
